The Ancient Sanctuary of Messon

It's here

The Sanctuary of Messon (Mesa Sanctuary), dedicated to Zeus, is located in the outskirts of Agia Paraskevi, in the area called “Koukala” or “Kokkala”.

In antiquity, the sanctuary was located close to the north border of the territory of the town of Ancient Pyrra and in the middle (center) of Lesvos. The word “messon” means “middle”. In the beginning of 4th century AD, the temple was destroyed and its architectural features were utterly crashed. The following years important repairs took place. In early Christian times, a basilica was built on the top of the temple, which was later supplanted by the post-Byzantine church of Taxiarhis.

The Ionian Temple of Messon is one of the most significant monuments in Lesvos. The visitors can admire the decoration of the architectural features and have a view of the temple from the west. Walk around the archaeological site and follow the paved paths until you arrive to the small auditorium.
