The Castle of Sigri

It's here

The castle of Sigri is one of the later fortresses in Lesvos. It is located in the westernmost  coast of the island and it was built in 1757 by Suleiman Pasha for the protection of the area from the pirate’s invasions and the safe transportation of cargo.

The castle of Sigri maintains its first characteristics and today it is very well preserved. It has small dimensions and it is square in the floor plan with square towers in its four corners. In the east, the central gate closes with a two-ply door, lined with iron plates. It is ornamented with an Arabic sharpened- point arc which was constructed with red and white stones. In the interior of the castle there are cells (constructed with stoned or bricks) that were used for the accommodation of the permanent guard.

The visitors can admire the inlaid Turkish inscriptions and the fine decoration and be impressed by the breathtaking view to the Aegean Sea. The castle is open all year long and it has free admission.
